Love Lies Bleeding premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 20, 2024. In the United States, it was theatrically released on March 8, 2024.
In the United Kingdom, it was Lionsgate UK’s theatrical release date on May 3, 2024. The film has been received well by critics.
Plot
Love lies It’s now 1989, but it’s still that of a rural New Mexican town. Lou is the reclusive manager of a local gym, yet she cares for her sister Beth, Beth’s husband JJ, and even styles her hair and dresses her in little outfits for Daisy.
But one night at the gym, Lou’s carefully constructed life is turned upside down when FBI agents come looking for information about Lou’s estranged father, Lou Sr., whose crime ties have taken him to places where people go to disappear.
Not much later, Lou lands Jackie, a bisexual bodybuilder who is in town to train for a competition in Las Vegas. Lou offers Jackie steroids to help her in her training and although she declines them at first, Jackie eventually caves in. A night of lovespending after, the couple moves in together.
Weeks later they’re in love with each other as Jackie continues making increasingly high doses of steroids while preparing for a competition.
Bleeding Jackie and Lou witness an uncomfortable dinner with JJ and Beth when Lou threatens JJ over his abuse of Beth. JJ defangs Lou by implying that he and Jackie slept together on her first night in town in return for a waitressing job at Lou Sr.’s gun range.
Horrified and furious, Lou says she wants to kill JJ because he’s abused Beth, the only reason Lou hasn’t left town.
Love Lies Bleeding 24 The next day, JJ seriously maltreats Beth to the extent that she ends up in the hospital. Lou Sr. reassures her that he will keep Beth safe and also take care of JJ at the bedside.
Jackie, on steroids, breaks secretly into Beth and JJ’s house while and kills JJ most brutally. Lou finds the body of JJ. Feared that Jackie will end up in jail, Lou plots to frame his father for committing the murder.
With Jackie’s aid, Lou takes JJ’s car and body to a ravine, which later develops as a dumping ground for the bodies of Lou Sr.’s various criminal foes. There, the pair set the car alight with the result of a tremendous smoke plume that effectively draws police to the site the next morning.
Loves The next day, Lou visits JJ and Beth’s house to clean up any evidence related to the murder as Jackie continues to consume steroids, which has made her increasingly irritable.
Jackie leaves the house during a fight and hitchhikes her way to Las Vegas for the bodybuilding competition. As Jackie goes through her routine, she becomes delusional and believes she vomits up a fully-grown Lou before attacking another contender, for which she is subsequently arrested.
Knowing Lou and Jackie were somehow involved in the JJ murder after she saw the couple drive away to the ravine the night before, Daisy blackmails Lou into a relationship.
After intercepting her call to Lou, Jackie calls Lou Sr. to get her out of jail. After bailing her out, Lou Sr. forces Jackie to kill Daisy, who is the only witness to the murder.
Love Lies Bleeding 24 Following the shooting of Daisy at Lou’s apartment, Jackie returns to Lou Sr. and is beaten unconscious. Lou Sr. calls Lou and lets her know he’s made arrangements for Jackie to take the rap for the deaths of JJ and Daisy.
However, Lou, who has assisted her father in earlier instances of killing, declares she will cooperate with the FBI investigation if he sets up Jackie.
Lou Sr.’s henchman sends a policeman on his payroll to kill Lou but is overpowered by Lou and drives to her father’s home to rescue Jackie. At Lou Sr.’s manor Beth, now aware of her role in JJ’s death, renounces Lou to her face. Lou locates and frees Jackie.
When Lou Sr. shoots Lou in the leg she and Jackie try to escape. Jackie, having grown to monstrous size due to steroid use, restrains Lou Sr. Lou, intent on murdering him, changes his mind and flees him to the police.
Lou and Jackie drive off into the night. It is morning the next day when Lou realizes that Daisy, having survived the almost fatal wound she sustained, is still alive in the truck bed.
He chokes her to death and abandons her body in a nearby field where no one will ever be able to salvage her when Jackie falls asleep.
